In 1949, a 13 year-old-boy became the center of a case of possession. The case was virtually forgotten until it was used as the source material for the Peter Blatty book The Exorcist.

Roman Rite 1614 Roman Rite 1998

Under Pope Paul V, the Roman Rituale of 1614 established the standards for Catholic Priest and formalized the various rituals of the Church. This document provide guidance for over 400 years. The Exorcism Rite included in this document was the first stand-alone exorcism rite for the Catholic Church. Previously, the Exorcism was only contained as part of the Baptism Rite.

In 1998, the Catholic Church issued its first major changes to the Catholic Rituals in 400 years. While there is very little change to the Exorcism Rite, the Rite is included here for reference.
